Counselling

Counselling plays a crucial role in the comprehensive care provided to individuals and families affected by leprosy. In the hospital setting, counsellors focus on delivering holistic care to address the significant social stigma, negative perceptions, limited awareness and knowledge, poor self-acceptance, inadequate psychological coping, and challenging socio-economic conditions associated with leprosy. There are two main areas of counselling that are essential for individuals and families affected by leprosy:

1. Leprosy Educational and Motivational Counseling:
Counsellors provide education and motivation to individuals and families affected by leprosy. This counselling aims to dispel misconceptions, enhance understanding of the disease, and promote positive attitudes. It addresses concerns related to the fear of stigma, discrimination, reactions from others, the future impact of the disease, and potential disfigurement. By providing accurate information and support, counsellors help individuals overcome their fears and navigate the social challenges associated with leprosy.

2. Psychological Counseling and Coping Skills:
Counsellors offer psychological counselling and coping strategies to help individuals and families affected by leprosy deal with the emotional impact of diagnosis and its community consequences. Illiteracy and lack of awareness often make it more challenging for these individuals to address their fears. Counsellors act as essential providers of psychological care, bridging the gap between clinicians and patients. All registered leprosy patients, as well as those receiving follow-up care, receive counselling to enhance their ability to cope with the various challenges they face.

Additionally, educational counselling is crucial for leprosy-affected individuals due to the following reasons:
– Correcting misconceptions about the infectivity of leprosy
– Providing adequate knowledge about the disease
– Addressing beliefs and myths surrounding leprosy

Through counselling, individuals and families affected by leprosy receive the necessary support, guidance, and information to empower them to manage their condition and lead fulfilling lives.
