Our Journey

The Leprosy Mission Hospital Naini was established as Home for affected by Leprosy in 1876, by Missionaries who saw people affected leprosy in hundreds at the banks river Ganga. It was the suffering of the person affected by leprosy that moved the hearts to Missionaries and so was born The Leprosy Mission Hospital Naini.

The Missionary brought Leprosy affected people who were living at the banks of Ganga to Naini which is about 3 kilometers from “Sangam” famous for Kumbh Mela across the world.

There is no writing available which mentions the name or the names of Missionaries who founded The Home for Leper’s, but we know that Col. E Hudson who was the Superintendent of Naini Jail back in late 1800s was one of main person to establish The Home for leprosy affected people at Naini.

Col. E Hudson was a Medical Officer in the British army and he pioneered in farming at Naini Central Jail. He taught the inmates of jail about farming and used the yield to improve the living condition of the inmates of the Naini Central Jail. Col. E. Hudson also started the use of chulas using charcoal at the Naini Cnetral Jail.

In the year 1903 Mr. Sam Higgin Bottom took over from Col. E Hudson and became the first Superintendent and later in 1906, The Leprosy Mission Hospital Naini became part of THE Leprosy Mission Trust India.

After years of serving the people affected by leprosy today this small Home of People affected by leprosy has become a 150 bedded Hospital.
